How should I hang these portraits?

These framed works suit traditional reception rooms or study walls where proper lighting can highlight the canvas or engraving. Ensure they hang away from direct sunlight to protect delicate watercolours, pastels, and historical pigments. Group smaller silhouettes or miniature watercolours together to create a focal point, or let a single large oil painting command a wall on its own. Match the weight of the frame to the surrounding wall space for balance.

Are these portraits original period pieces?

The selection includes original nineteenth century oils, pastels, and watercolours created during the Regency and Georgian periods. Each listing details the specific medium and estimated date of creation. You will also find later nineteenth century interpretations and early twentieth century engravings after original works. Read individual descriptions to verify the precise age and technique of each piece.

What is a silhouette portrait?

A silhouette is a profile portrait cut from black paper or painted onto a pale background, popular during the Georgian era. Gilded silhouettes add highlights in gold leaf to delineate clothing and hair details. These compact pieces are typically housed in small wooden frames made of rosewood or maple. They offer an intimate record of sitters before the widespread adoption of photography.

How do I care for antique paper and ivory?

Works on paper, pastels, and ivory miniatures require stable indoor humidity and protection from moisture and direct UV rays. Keep them behind glass and avoid hanging them in damp areas like kitchens or unheated rooms. Dust wooden and gilt frames gently with a dry, soft cloth without applying liquid polishes. Leave any deep conservation work to professional conservators.
