How do I identify a genuine Regency chest?

Authentic Regency pieces display period construction methods such as hand-cut dovetails on oak drawer linings and appropriate timber ageing. Look for characteristic design proportions and period-appropriate brass hardware. Examine the secondary woods and interior surfaces for consistency with early nineteenth-century workshop practices. Original locks and backboards further support the period attribution.

What is a campaign chest?

A campaign chest is a form of modular storage made in two or more stacking sections for military transport. They feature flush-mounted brass handles and protective corner brackets. These pieces were constructed from durable timbers like teak or mahogany to withstand harsh climates. Their sectional design allows them to separate easily for moving.

Are brass handles original to these chests?

Original brass handles are secured with specific pin configurations and show natural age patination that matches the surrounding timber. Replacement hardware often leaves filled holes or lacks the correct period casting style. Inspect the interior of the drawer fronts to see if the fixing positions align with historic mounting patterns. Consistent wear around the plates indicates long-term association with the piece.

How should I care for a mahogany chest?

Keep mahogany furniture away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent the timber from drying out or splitting. Apply traditional wax polish sparingly to maintain the finish. Maintain stable indoor humidity levels to protect both the solid wood construction and any delicate veneer work. Handle drawers carefully to preserve the original runners and internal structure.
