What is a red ziegler rug?

A red ziegler rug is a nineteenth-century Persian carpet produced during the 1880, 1890, and 1900 periods, often associated with Sultanabad and Mahal workshop traditions. These carpets were specifically designed for Western homes, featuring grand proportions and softened red fields that suit large drawing rooms and country houses.

How do I care for a large carpet?

Large wool and cotton carpets require gentle, regular vacuuming without a rotating beater bar to protect the pile and foundation. Professional cleaning should be undertaken periodically by specialists familiar with nineteenth-century Persian textiles. Positioning the rug out of direct, intense sunlight preserves the natural dyes and prevents uneven fading across the large expanse of wool.

What distinguishes Sultanabad from Ziegler?

Sultanabad and Ziegler designations often overlap, as both refer to late nineteenth-century Persian carpet production from the Arak region. Ziegler specifically denotes the commercial firm that commissioned and exported these large-scale designs. Both styles share generous proportions and bold, spaced floral patterns, though individual pieces vary in their specific palette and motif arrangements.

Where were these carpets made?

These carpets were woven in Persia during the late nineteenth century, primarily in and around the town of Sultanabad, which is modern-day Arak. Workshops there produced substantial floor coverings for international export. The regional weavers adapted classic Persian patterns to meet the scale and decorative preferences of European and American residences.
