How do I clean an antique rug?

Gentle surface brushing and professional specialist washing preserve the natural wool pile. Avoid harsh chemical detergents that strip the lanolin. Water immersion should only be handled by conservators experienced in antique vegetable-dyed textiles to prevent colour migration.

Can I place these rugs in high traffic areas?

Wool pile rugs woven with cotton foundations withstand moderate foot traffic in hallways and living spaces. Placing a quality underlay beneath the textile prevents sliding and reduces friction. Rotate the carpet periodically to ensure even wear across the field and exposure to light.

How do I identify a village rug from a city rug?

Village productions display bolder, geometric designs with coarser knotting and heavier wool. City carpets utilise finer floral motifs, silk highlights, and higher knot counts. Regional palettes also offer clues, with Caucasian pieces showing stark primary colours and Persian workshops displaying botanical curves.

What causes colour variations in the red field?

Hand-dyed wool batches absorb natural pigments differently, creating gentle tonal shifts known as abrash across the carpet. Age and sunlight exposure further mellow the madder root dyes over time. These natural irregularities indicate traditional vegetable dyeing methods rather than synthetic colourants.
