What is a red isfahan carpet?

A red isfahan carpet is a woven floor textile originating from central Persia, typically produced between eighteen-ninety and nineteen-thirty. These pieces display traditional medallion designs and floral motifs set against red wool fields. They represent a specific regional tradition known for high knot density and refined artistic execution. Buyers select them for their historical design pedigree and warm colour palettes.

How do I date an old isfahan rug?

Dating relies upon stylistic markers, material analysis, and construction characteristics recorded from the period of origin. Pieces from around nineteen-hundred often exhibit classic medallion layouts and fine wool weaves. Examining the foundation threads and the handling of the wool provides further context for the decade of production. Comparing the knotting fineness against documented examples helps narrow the timeline.

Where were these carpets made?

These carpets were made in central Persia, specifically within the historic city of Isfahan and surrounding workshops. Master weavers in this region produced textiles for both domestic use and export. The urban environment of Isfahan fostered workshops dedicated to intricate floral designs and refined weaving techniques. This distinct geographical origin defines the aesthetic of the carpets.

How should I care for wool rugs?

Proper maintenance involves regular gentle vacuuming without a beater bar to protect the wool and silk pile. Professional cleaning by specialists in antique textiles ensures the dyes and foundation remain intact. Keeping the rug away from direct, harsh sunlight prevents the red dyes from fading over time. Rotating the piece periodically ensures even wear across high-traffic areas.
