How do I know if the frame is original to the artwork?

Original pairings typically show consistent ageing across both the artwork and the frame, including matching dust accumulation, compatible rebates and period-appropriate fixings. Inspect the back of the piece for signs that the artwork has remained undisturbed within the moulding over generations.

What periods do these frames represent?

The selections span from the seventeenth century through the Georgian, Regency and Victorian eras, reflecting the prevailing aesthetic of each design movement. Characteristics range from seventeenth-century carved profiles to nineteenth-century gilt overmantle mirrors and watercolour surrounds.

Can I hang a heavy oil painting safely?

Heavier oil paintings require robust wooden frames with strong corner joinery and secure hanging hardware fixed directly into the primary timber. Ensure the weight of the canvas distributes evenly across the internal rebate and that the hanging wire or rings are sound.

How should I clean a antique gilt frame?

Dust gilt frames gently with a soft, dry brush to prevent disturbing fragile gold leaf or aged gesso surfaces. Avoid liquid cleaners, modern detergents or abrasive cloths, which can strip the historic finish entirely.
