What is a table lustre?

A table lustre is an ornamental candle holder adorned with hanging glass pendants designed to refract light. They were popular in nineteenth-century interiors for adding sparkle to dimly lit rooms. Unlike standard candlesticks, lustres often serve a purely decorative function when unlit, catching natural daylight through their faceted crystal drops.

How do I clean crystal lights?

Cleaning requires a gentle approach using a mild solution of warm water and washing-up liquid applied with a soft cloth. Individual crystal drops should be wiped carefully and dried immediately to prevent water spots. Avoid submerging metal mounts or antique electrical components in water to protect the underlying gilt or brass surfaces from damage.

Were these originally electrified?

Most pieces dating from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries were manufactured exclusively for candles before being adapted for electricity later in their lifespan. Early twentieth-century examples occasionally incorporated dual wiring alongside traditional candle sockets. Conversion work usually involves running discreet internal cords through the central column without altering the exterior decorative metalwork.

How do I date an antique light?

Dating relies on examining the manufacturing techniques visible in the metal casting, the style of the crystal cutting, and the assembly methods used for the drops. French pieces often bear distinct stylistic markers associated with periods like the Belle Epoque or Art Deco. Component wear, screw threads, and the composition of the glass further help specialists place a pair within a specific decade or century.
