Are these original low tables?

Many nineteenth century examples began life as taller centre tables or occasional tables before being lowered to function as coffee tables. This adaptation allows period timber to serve contemporary living spaces. Other pieces retain their original proportions from the early twentieth century or later eras of manufacture.

How do I care for walnut?

Walnut benefits from occasional polishing with appropriate wax to nourish the grain and protect the delicate veneer surface. Direct sunlight should be avoided to prevent the rich brown tones from fading over time. Using coasters and placemats protects the polish from moisture and heat marks during everyday use.

Burr walnut comes from an excrescence on the tree where the grain grew in a deformed, swirling manner. This produces complex, eye-catching patterns that cabinetmakers prized for decorative tabletops. Because of its irregularity, it was sliced into thin veneers and applied over stable foundational woods.

How do I date a table?

Dating relies on stylistic clues, construction methods, and the type of secondary woods visible beneath the table. Victorian pieces often display heavier carved bases or rich marquetry, whereas nineteen thirties examples may show simpler Art Deco lines. Matching the materials and joinery to known historical periods helps narrow down the decade of creation.
