How do I identify a genuine print?

Look closely for the physical indentation of the plate mark around the image area, which distinguishes an original plate impression from a modern mechanical reproduction. Genuine examples also frequently feature pencil signatures and proof markings. Examine the texture of the ink on the paper or vellum surface under magnification. Authentic etchings and drypoints display a slight raised quality to the dried ink lines.

What is the difference between paper and vellum?

Paper provides a traditional, absorbent base that holds fine etched lines with stark clarity. Vellum offers a smoother, skin-based surface that interacts with ink to produce a softer, more luminous finish. Vellum examples were often reserved for special proof impressions, making them particularly sought after by dedicated collectors of the period.

How should I frame and display these works?

Protect these historic works by using acid-free mounts and framing them behind conservation glass to block harmful ultraviolet light. Direct sunlight can rapidly fade both paper supports and the dark printing inks. Maintain stable indoor humidity levels to prevent the vellum or paper from warping within the frame over time.

Are all editions signed by the artist?

Many of the finer proofs and limited editions carry a hand-written pencil signature below the image area. This signature confirms the artist's personal approval of the printed impression. Unsigned impressions or later editions do exist, though signed artist proofs remain the benchmark for collectors.
