What is an octagonal mahogany cellarette?

An octagonal mahogany cellarette is a dedicated timber container built to hold wine bottles and ice during formal dining. These eight-sided vessels emerged primarily in the Georgian period to keep wine chilled close to the table. Craftsmen utilised dense timbers and metal bindings to handle the weight of wet bottles and ice. Today, they serve equally well as decorative storage pieces or sophisticated plant holders.

How were these cellarettes used originally?

Servants filled the lined interior with ice and placed wine bottles inside to chill before serving them to guests. The heavy timber walls helped maintain lower temperatures throughout lengthy meals. After dining, the lockable lid kept remaining stock secure from household staff. Their placement typically remained on the floor directly beneath the dining room sideboard.

How do I tell an 18th-century piece from a revival?

Eighteenth-century examples display natural timber patination, hand-cut joinery, and period-specific brass fixings forged by hand. The wood grain shows decades of subtle wear and consistent polishing. Twentieth-century revival pieces often exhibit uniform machine finishing, brighter brass work lacking age wear, and standardised internal components. Examining the interior construction reveals the manufacturing methods of the era.

Can I use a cellarette as a jardiniere?

Many surviving cellarettes feature metal linings that make them suitable for holding potted plants and flowers. Using them as indoor planters bridges historic utility with modern interior styling. Care must be taken to protect the interior wood from prolonged standing water if the original lead or metal liner is absent or compromised.
