What is a neoclassical urn lamp?

A neoclassical urn lamp is a lighting fixture fashioned from a classical vase or urn shape, typically rendered in stone and metal. These pieces draw on ancient Greek and Roman architecture to provide decorative table lighting for period interiors.

How do I date an antique lamp?

Dating relies on examining the materials, mounting styles, and wiring methods used in construction. Nineteenth-century examples often feature heavy ormolu and hand-carved marble, while nineteen-twenties pieces introduce alabaster and simpler cast brass mounts.

Were these always electric lamps?

Many of these pieces began as oil lamps, decorative urns, or candelabra before being converted for electricity. Conversions often took place during the early twentieth century as homes adopted electric lighting while retaining antique vessels.

How do I clean marble and ormolu?

Cleaning requires a soft, dry cloth to remove dust from stone surfaces and intricate metal mounts. Harsh chemical cleaners and abrasive cloths must be avoided to prevent damage to the gilt surfaces and porous stone.
