What is a sofa table?

A sofa table is a long, narrow occasional table traditionally placed against the rear of a sofa or used freestanding in a room. They usually incorporate drop leaves at either end. These pieces were designed during the Regency period to hold writing materials, books, or lamps close to seating areas without taking up excessive floor space.

How do I date a mahogany table?

Dating relies upon observing construction methods, timber choice, and stylistic cues such as leg shape and inlay patterns. Regency and Georgian pieces often display hand-cut dovetails and distinct brass hardware. Later revival pieces from the Edwardian era adopt similar forms but frequently employ mechanised production techniques and lighter secondary timbers.

Were Pembroke tables used for dining?

Pembroke tables were primarily intended as versatile occasional pieces rather than main dining furniture. Their drop leaves allowed them to function as writing desks or side tables. Their compact footprint made them suitable for smaller parlours and morning rooms where furniture needed to adapt quickly to different daily activities.

How do I care for mahogany?

Mahogany requires stable room temperatures and protection from direct sunlight to preserve its deep colour and prevent timber warping. Regular dusting with a soft, dry cloth maintains the finish. Occasional application of traditional beeswax helps nourish the wood and preserves the natural lustre of older polished surfaces.
