How do I date a mahogany revolving chair?

Examine the undercarriage construction, the timber of the secondary framing, and the design of the swivel mechanism. Earlier Georgian and Regency models employ heavier iron pivots, whilst Victorian and Edwardian versions introduce lighter cast iron components. Upholstery tacks and leather fixing methods also provide clues, though many chairs have been re-covered over decades of use.

Can I use a drum table as a desk?

A drum table provides a large circular surface and built-in drawers, making it suitable for occasional writing or laptop work. The frieze drawers offer storage for stationery, though knee clearance depends on the height of the central pedestal base. Most historical examples were designed for central placement in a library rather than pushing flat against a wall.

What is the difference between a drum table and a library table?

A drum table specifically refers to a round table with a deep top housing alternating real and dummy drawers around a central column. General library tables encompass rectangular formats as well as circular ones, often serving larger reading rooms. Both forms utilise robust mahogany construction to withstand heavy daily handling.

How do I care for the leather top?

Clean the leather surface gently with a damp, soft cloth and avoid harsh chemical cleaners that strip historical patination. Feed the hide periodically with a suitable leather dressing to prevent cracking. Keep these pieces away from direct sunlight and strong heat sources to protect both the mahogany finish and the leather.
