What is a lowboy chest?

A lowboy chest is a table-height drawer unit designed for domestic storage and surface use. It bridges the function of a small chest of drawers and a side table. These pieces typically feature one or more drawers beneath a flat top, raised on four legs. They appear across eighteenth-century and revival periods.

How were lowboys used historically?

Historical use included placement in bedrooms as dressing tables for personal grooming and accessories. They also served in reception rooms as side tables. The compact footprint allowed placement in hallways and chambers where larger chests proved impractical.

How do I date a mahogany lowboy?

Dating relies on timber selection, secondary woods, handle hardware, and construction methods. Eighteenth-century examples display period-specific joinery and hand-cut elements. Revival pieces from the Edwardian era or later exhibit different internal construction traits and standardised fixings that distinguish them from earlier originals.

Where should I place a lowboy?

A lowboy fits well in hallways, living rooms, or bedrooms as a compact surface with enclosed storage. Its shallow depth suits narrow spaces. Keep the piece away from direct heat sources and strong sunlight to protect the mahogany finish and timber stability.
