What is a bijouterie table?

A bijouterie table is a piece of furniture featuring a glazed compartment beneath the top surface. It was designed for keeping and viewing jewellery, medals, and small decorative items. The glass top allows light to enter the display well while protecting the contents from dust and handling.

How do I date a mahogany display cabinet table?

Dating relies on observing stylistic markers, construction methods, and timber characteristics. Edwardian and late Victorian pieces frequently feature satinwood inlay and lighter framing. Earlier Georgian examples tend to show heavier proportions, denser mahogany, and different joinery techniques beneath the surface.

What were these tables used for historically?

Owners used these tables in drawing rooms and parlours to exhibit collections of personal treasures, coins, miniatures, and curiosities to guests. They served both as functional occasional furniture and as conversation pieces. The glazed compartment kept delicate items secure while remaining accessible for inspection.

How do I care for the velvet lining?

Velvet interiors require gentle maintenance to prevent dust accumulation and pile crushing. Vacuuming with a soft brush attachment on a low setting helps clear debris. Direct sunlight should be avoided to prevent the fabric and the surrounding mahogany from fading over time.
