How do I date a wooden madonna and child sculpture?

Dating relies on tool marks, timber species, and the degradation of underlying gesso layers. Oak points towards earlier centuries, while pine and hardwoods often suggest later periods. Style also offers clues, shifting from Gothic rigidity to the expressive freedom found in twentieth-century folk and outsider art.

What is a Santos figure?

A Santos figure is a carved devotional statue intended for worship or home altars. These pieces frequently originated in Spain, Latin America, or southern Europe. Many incorporate articulated limbs or carved wooden frames meant to be adorned with fabric clothing.

Where should I display a garden statue?

Garden statues require stable outdoor placement on plinths or paved terraces. Protection from severe winter frost prevents stone and concrete from cracking. Positioning them among foliage allows weathering to blend the sculpture into its environment naturally.

How do I clean polychrome wood?

Cleaning requires dry, soft brushing to remove surface dust without disturbing fragile paint layers. Water and chemical solvents damage historical pigments and gesso. Professional conservators should handle stubborn grime or flaking paint to preserve the original surface.

What distinguishes folk art from church sculpture?

Folk art and outsider pieces exhibit unacademic proportions and raw carving techniques executed by self-taught makers. They lack the formal training and workshop standardisation seen in religious statuary. Church carvings adhere strictly to traditional iconography and refined artisanal methods.
