What defines louis xv lamp tables?

These pieces are small occasional tables or adapted bedside cabinets featuring asymmetrical curves, cabriole legs, and floral marquetry. They reflect the revival of eighteenth-century French design tastes during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Craftsmen built them to hold lighting, display ornaments, or serve beside seating arrangements, using rich timbers accented with metal mounts.

How do I style them at home?

Their compact proportions make them versatile for placing beside armchairs, sofas, or beds where surface space is limited. The decorative wood veneers and gilt mounts complement both traditional interiors and neutral modern spaces. Pairing a marble-topped version with a simple ceramic lamp allows the detailed parquetry and bronze mounts to remain the visual focus.

Are these tables sturdy enough for daily use?

Despite their elegant cabriole legs and delicate appearance, antique examples constructed from dense hardwoods like walnut and kingwood are durable. Proper construction ensures they handle everyday domestic demands. Care should be taken with veneered surfaces and applied mounts, avoiding excessive moisture or heavy impacts that could damage the antique timber.

How can I tell the period of a table?

Dating relies on examining the timber construction methods, the composition of the bronze mounts, and the wear patterns on the underside of the piece. Nineteenth-century revival items often display heavier mechanical sawing marks compared to eighteenth-century originals. The specific style combinations, such as ormolu-mounted kingwood from the eighteen-eighties, provide clear clues to the era of manufacture.
