What is a louis xv cabinet on stand?

A louis xv cabinet on stand is a decorative storage or display piece elevated on legs or a separate base, reflecting eighteenth-century French design. Most examples found today date from the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, produced during periods of strong rococo revival interest.

How do I date a cabinet on stand?

Dating relies on examining the timber species, construction methods, and the style of any brass or ormolu mounts present. Revival pieces from the nineteenth century often employ machine-cut elements alongside hand-finishing, distinguishing them from earlier origins.

Where should I place a display cabinet?

These cabinets suit principal reception rooms or drawing rooms where natural light can enter glazed panels and illuminate contents. Care should be taken to keep them away from direct heat sources to protect timber veneers and historic finishes.

What materials are typical for these cabinets?

Common materials include kingwood and walnut veneers, often embellished with ormolu mounts, brass hardware, and occasional marble tops. Interiors may feature glass shelving and mirrored backs to enhance the display of smaller decorative objects.
