What is a bureau de dame?

A bureau de dame is a compact ladies writing desk that typically incorporates a sloping lid or a superstructure with small drawers. These refined pieces were designed for private correspondence in boudoirs and drawing rooms. Originating primarily in France, they often feature intricate marquetry and delicate cabriole legs. Their smaller scale makes them adaptable for placement in modern sitting rooms.

How do I identify a bonheur du jour?

A bonheur du jour is distinguished by the small cabinet, pigeonholes, or shelves fixed to the top of the writing surface. This elevated arrangement allows for the storage of stationery and letters close at hand. First appearing in France, the form was later embraced by British makers during the Edwardian and Victorian eras. They stand on slender legs and often showcase elaborate floral inlay.

Were these desks used for daily writing?

These desks were constructed for intimate correspondence, diary keeping, and managing household accounts rather than heavy administrative work. Their diminutive proportions reflect the social writing habits of nineteenth-century ladies. Many examples include specialised compartments for stamps, inkwells, and notepaper. Some versions also incorporate work boxes or sewing tables beneath the writing surface.

How do I distinguish Edwardian from Victorian pieces?

Victorian examples tend to display heavier proportions and darker rosewood finishes, frequently utilising bold marquetry and robust brass mounts. They often lean towards French revival styles with curved contours. Edwardian pieces generally present a lighter, more refined aesthetic associated with the Sheraton Revival. They favour delicate satinwood stringing and brighter contrast against the wood grain.
