How do I date inlaid mahogany seating?

Dating relies on stylistic markers and construction methods combined with the evidence of prevailing design periods. Georgian and Regency pieces show heavier architectural proportions, sometimes incorporating brass inlay, while Edwardian examples often feature lighter satinwood stringing and delicate marquetry. Changes in upholstery techniques and secondary woods also help narrow down the decade of production. Examining the overall silhouette against documented periods provides the clearest indication of age.

Are dining chairs sold as full sets?

Many dining chairs appear in matched groups ranging from four to twelve pieces. These sets often include a combination of standard side chairs and matching armchairs for the heads of the table. Individual chairs and small pairs also exist for bedroom or salon use. Buyers should check the composition of each listing to confirm whether the seating constitutes a complete matched suite.

Where were these chairs used historically?

Different forms served distinct rooms within the historic home. Dining chairs and large settees occupied formal entertaining spaces, while specialised items like piano stools, music chairs, and corner armchairs suited drawing rooms and parlors. Smaller side chairs, nursing chairs, and window seats were designed specifically for bedrooms and dressing rooms. Their placement depended entirely on the domestic function dictated by the period.

What is Sheraton Revival seating?

Sheraton Revival pieces are late nineteenth and early twentieth-century interpretations of eighteenth-century designs popularized by Thomas Sheraton. They utilise mahogany frames enhanced by delicate satinwood inlay and refined proportions. These revival pieces captured the elegance of earlier Georgian furniture while accommodating modern manufacturing techniques and Victorian comfort standards. They remain a distinct stylistic subset within Edwardian furniture.
