What is a howard style calico chair?

A howard style calico chair is a deep seated nineteenth or early twentieth century armchair upholstered in plain cotton calico. These pieces originate from Victorian and Edwardian periods. They were built for relaxed seating in country houses and studies. The design prioritises deep proportions and supportive springing over rigid formal posture.

How were these armchairs used?

These armchairs served as comfortable lounge seating in libraries, drawing rooms, and bedrooms. Their deep seats allowed people to recline comfortably. They formed part of relaxed domestic interiors during the Victorian and Edwardian eras. Daybeds and open armchairs shared these living spaces.

How do I live with one?

Living with a howard style calico chair involves placing it in a room where deep seating is useful. The neutral calico fabric fits easily into various colour schemes. Regular gentle vacuuming keeps the calico clean. The sturdy hardwood frames and brass castors make moving the chair straightforward.

How do I tell periods apart?

Victorian examples often feature heavier proportions and darker timber legs. Edwardian versions can appear slightly lighter in build. Construction details like hessian webbing and hardwood frames remain consistent across the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
