What is a hallmarked silver gift?

A hallmarked silver gift comprises objects made from solid sterling silver that bear official assay office marks. These items span practical tableware, desk accessories, and ceremonial presentation pieces. Such objects were traditionally commissioned to mark births, christenings, and important household occasions. The presence of a hallmark guarantees the metal standard.

How do I date a silver mug?

Dating a silver mug involves reading the specific letter stamp found within the hallmark cluster. Each assay office used a distinct alphabet cycle that changed yearly. Matching the letter punch against assay office records reveals the exact year of manufacture. Stylistic details like Victorian embossing or Edwardian proportions offer further clues.

Were christening mugs used?

Christening mugs served both practical dining functions and ceremonial display roles within Victorian and Edwardian households. Families often used them daily as children grew. Over time, many mugs transitioned into permanent keepsakes stored within fitted presentation boxes. This dual use explains the varying degrees of wear found on surviving examples.

How do I clean silver safely?

Cleaning silver requires a non-abrasive silver cloth or a gentle liquid polish designed for precious metals. Harsh scrubbing destroys delicate engravings and wears down the underlying metal. Storing pieces in dry conditions away from direct sunlight helps prevent rapid tarnishing. Velvet-lined presentation cases offer ideal protection when the items are not on display.
