What periods do these pieces cover?

The listings include works from the seventeenth, eighteenth, nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. These span diverse historical epochs from Baroque Spanish portraits to Edwardian marine watercolours. Makers across these eras utilised traditional materials like oil on canvas, wood panels and giltwood frames to create enduring visual pieces.

How do I identify a period frame?

Period frames often display hand-carved wooden mouldings finished with gesso and gold leaf rather than modern synthetic alternatives. Examination of the corner joints and the underlying plaster ground helps reveal the age of the construction. Many listings pair nineteenth or eighteenth-century artworks with contemporary or original frames that match the stylistic conventions of their creation date.

How should I care for a giltwood frame?

Giltwood frames require gentle dust removal with a dry, soft brush to protect the delicate gold leaf and gesso layers. Avoid using liquid cleaners or chemical solvents which can strip the metallic finish. Keeping the artwork away from direct sunlight and excessive humidity preserves both the wooden support and the gilt surface over time.
