How do I clean a giltwood frame?

Dust the surface gently with a soft, dry brush to remove particles without disturbing the delicate gold leaf. Avoid using water, chemical solvents, or abrasive cloths, as these will strip the metallic finish from the wood beneath.

Were these paintings always framed in gold?

Most nineteenth-century oil paintings were paired with gilded wooden surrounds designed to complement the tones within the canvas. Frames were occasionally replaced later in a painting's history to match changing interior design preferences.

How do I identify the date of a canvas?

Examine the stretcher bars, canvas texture, and framing style for clues consistent with specific nineteenth or twentieth-century manufacturing techniques. Artist signatures, inscriptions on the reverse, and stylistic markers in the brushwork also help narrow down the period.

Can I hang an oil painting in direct sunlight?

Direct sunlight causes pigments in oil paint to fade and accelerates the degradation of canvas and wooden framing materials. Position the artwork on an interior wall away from strong windows to preserve the colours and structural integrity.
