How do I use a fire screen safely?

Place the screen at a safe distance from an active fire to catch flying embers and protect the room. Ensure the base or folding feet sit steadily on a flat hearth. Fold or move the screen aside only when the fire is fully extinguished and cool. For folding fan designs, open and close the blades gently to prevent strain on the pivot pins.

Can I use these screens with a working fire?

Most metal and wire mesh screens are built to withstand hearth heat and function as practical spark guards. Glass or mirrored panels require more caution regarding extreme temperature shifts. Check that the mesh or guard panel is securely fixed within the frame before exposure to high heat. Regular cleaning prevents soot accumulation from dulling the metal finish.

How do I clean a brass or gilt screen?

Dust the frame gently with a soft dry cloth to remove surface soot and debris. Avoid harsh chemical polishes that can strip thin gilt layers or antique patination. For stubborn grime, use mild soapy water on a damp cloth, drying the metal immediately afterwards. Preserving the natural aged patina is generally preferred over aggressive cleaning.

How do I distinguish French revival styles?

Look closely at the motifs and casting details to identify specific revival periods. Rococo revival pieces feature asymmetric curves, acanthus leaves, and shell forms. Louis XVI style screens display greater symmetry, straight lines, and classical trophies like ribbons and musical instruments. Empire revival items often incorporate bold classical urns, torches, and martial emblems.
