What periods do these carvings date from?

The pieces span from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries through the Edwardian era, Art Deco period, and mid-century decades. Many items reflect the crossover between late Qing craftsmanship and Western revival styles. Buyers find both authentic Asian export works and British or European decorative items created under the influence of Chinoiserie and Chinese Chippendale tastes.

How do I care for giltwood and lacquered items?

Giltwood and lacquered surfaces require gentle dusting with a soft, dry cloth to prevent abrasion of the delicate gold leaf or pigmented layers. Avoid moisture, direct sunlight, and chemical cleaning products which can lift the finish. Stable indoor humidity helps preserve wooden panels, frames, and screens, preventing the base material from expanding or contracting.

What is the difference between jade and jadeite?

Jade is a term encompassing two distinct mineral species: nephrite and jadeite. The items on this page predominantly feature jadeite, known for its bright translucence and vivid green colourations. Both minerals share exceptional toughness, making them ideal for detailed hand-carved jewellery and decorative pendants.

Were these pieces made in Asia or Europe?

The selection includes a combination of items manufactured in China for export, such as temple panels, bronzes, and deities, alongside European pieces created in the Chinese taste. Styles like Chinese Chippendale and Chinoiserie represent British and continental interpretations, while other objects originate directly from workshops in Asia during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
