How do I wire antique wall lights for modern use?

Most vintage metal wall lights can be adapted by a qualified electrician using heat-resistant cable and appropriately sized lampholders that fit within the original brass or bronze drip pans. Original backplates generally retain enough depth to accommodate modern wiring channels without altering the visible exterior of the fixture.

Were these fixtures originally for candles or electricity?

Examples originating from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries were designed exclusively for wax candles, utilising mirrored backs or crystal drops to maximise the flickering light. Pieces manufactured during the twentieth century frequently show conversion to electricity or were built specifically to house early electric bulb fittings.

How do I clean gilt metal surfaces safely?

Dusting gently with a soft, dry brush or microfiber cloth prevents the accumulation of grime without disturbing fragile gold leaf or patinated finishes. Water, abrasive cleaners and chemical polishes should be avoided entirely, as they strip away the historic gilding and expose the base metal underneath.

How do I identify Louis XVI style wall lights?

Louis XVI style pieces typically feature neoclassical geometry, straight lines, symmetrical urns, ram's head masks and acanthus leaf motifs rather than the asymmetrical curves of earlier Rococo designs. Construction from this design vocabulary relies on crisp casting and formal balance, often executed in ormolu or gilded bronze.
