How do I hang a heavy oil painting?

Heavy canvas works require secure wall fixings anchored directly into masonry or wooden studs to support the substantial weight of the timber and plaster frame. Ensure that picture wire and D-rings rated for the specific weight of the painting are correctly fitted to the back of the frame before mounting.

How do I clean a gilt frame?

Dust giltwood frames gently using a soft, dry brush to remove surface particles without disturbing the delicate gold leaf finish. Avoid using water, chemical solvents, or abrasive cloths, as these substances can strip the gilding and damage the historic wood underneath.

What is an English school painting?

An English school attribution denotes a work produced by an artist working within Britain during a specific period, often when the exact individual creator remains unknown. These pieces reflect the prevailing portraiture and landscape traditions taught and practiced within British artistic circles at the time.

How should I light an oil painting?

Position picture lights or ambient room lighting to illuminate the canvas evenly while avoiding direct, intense heat that can dry out old oil paint and canvas. Low-heat LED bulbs placed at a distance help protect the pigments and the gilt frame from thermal damage over time.
