How do I choose the right size ceiling fitting?

Consider the dimensions of your room and the height of your ceiling before selecting a fixture. Grand multi-light chandeliers require substantial floor space to balance their visual weight, whereas compact hall lanterns suit restricted vertical clearances. Measure the drop distance to ensure the fitting clears foot traffic while remaining properly positioned in the space.

Can these antique fittings use modern bulbs?

Most period lighting fixtures accommodate modern wiring and standard bulb bases with professional rewiring. Electricians can adapt older lamp holders to take low-energy or LED alternatives safely. Retaining the original sockets is possible for display purposes, but daily operation typically requires updated internal electrical components.

How do I clean crystal and gilt fixtures?

Dust metal frames gently with a soft brush and clean crystal components using a mild solution of warm water and alcohol. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners that strip the delicate gilt surface from bronze or brass. Removing detachable crystals allows for thorough cleaning without risking damage to the antique metal structure.

What is the difference between an Empire and a Rococo style fitting?

Empire style fittings draw inspiration from classical antiquity, featuring symmetrical lines, laurel wreaths, and restrained neoclassical ornamentation. They project a formal and structured aesthetic. In contrast, Rococo style fittings embrace asymmetrical curves, C-scrolls, and exuberant natural motifs like leaves and shells for a more theatrical appearance.
