Are these lamps safe to use today?

Many period lamps are rewired to meet modern electrical standards while retaining their historic components. Buyers should check individual listings to confirm whether a piece has been recently tested by a qualified electrician.

How do I clean gilt brass?

Dusting gently with a soft, dry cloth preserves the fragile gilt surface without stripping the metallic finish. Harsh commercial polishes and abrasive cleaners must be avoided entirely to prevent permanent damage to the gilding.

What is the difference between ormolu and gilt brass?

Ormolu specifically denotes gilded bronze cast and chased by hand, common in high-end French decorative arts. Gilt brass refers to a brass base with a gold-coloured surface treatment, which was typically used for more accessible domestic lighting.

Can I adjust the angle of the light?

Certain designs feature pivoting joints or adjustable arms intended for directing task illumination across a surface. Fixed column lamps and candlesticks converted to lighting remain stationary and serve as ambient desk ornaments.
