How do I identify a true antique wall sconce?

Examine the construction methods, joining techniques, and metal patination visible on the reverse of the backplate. Older fixtures typically display hand-finished casting marks and traditional fastening screws rather than modern machine-threaded components. Contextual clues such as French regional styling, period-specific gilding wear, and historical material composition help confirm the dating of nineteenth and early twentieth-century examples.

Were these fixtures originally wired for electricity?

Many examples dating from the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries were originally designed to hold candles rather than electric bulbs. Sconces from periods like nineteen-thirty frequently encountered the transition toward electrification. Buyers often find pieces that have been subsequently adapted or rewired for modern electrical standards while retaining their original decorative metal bodies and candle-form sleeves.

What is the difference between ormolu and gilded brass?

Ormolu specifically denotes mercury gilding applied to a bronze base, yielding a deep and lustrous golden finish common in high-status French decorative arts. Gilded brass involves applying gold leaf or gilt treatment over a brass substrate, producing a lighter tone. Both materials were utilised extensively across historical wall lights, with bronze typically reserved for heavier, more intricately cast luxury pieces.

How should I hang heavy multi-arm wall sconces safely?

Multi-arm sconces, particularly triple-arm and larger sets in cast bronze, possess substantial weight that requires secure anchoring into solid wall structures. Utilising appropriate wall fixings matched to the weight of the metal prevents strain on plaster. Professional installation is recommended to ensure the backplate sits flush against the wall and safely supports the load of the extended arms.
