How do I hang a heavy gesso mirror?

These heavy frames require robust wall fixings anchored directly into masonry or secure wall studs. Professional mirror hangers typically use heavy-duty brackets to support the substantial weight safely. Positioning the piece securely ensures the frame remains stable and prevents strain on the original wooden structure and joints.

Are original mirror plates common?

Many antique frames retain their original glass plates, which often display characteristic foxing, soft oxidation, and subtle distortions. These traits confirm the age and authenticity of the piece. Replacement glass does appear in some examples where the original plate suffered irreparable damage over the centuries.

How do I clean a gilt gesso frame?

Dusting the frame gently with a soft, dry brush prevents the accumulation of dirt within the intricate carved recesses. Moisture and modern cleaning chemicals should be avoided entirely to protect the fragile gold leaf and gesso layers. Maintaining a stable indoor environment away from direct heat sources protects the gesso from cracking or separating from the wood.
