What is a housekeeper cabinet?

A housekeeper cabinet is a large, utilitarian storage piece traditionally used in country houses to store household linens, dry goods, and provisions. These pieces were kept in utility rooms or estate offices rather than formal reception rooms, reflecting their practical purpose in managing a large household.

How do I tell Welsh and English oak cupboards apart?

Welsh cupboards often follow specific regional vernacular forms such as the deuddarn or incorporate distinct local framing and panel carving traditions. English country pieces tend to align more closely with standard Georgian proportions and construction methods found across provincial cabinet-making workshops.

How should I care for antique oak timber?

Antique oak benefits from stable room temperatures and protection from direct sunlight to prevent the timber from drying out or splitting. Applying a traditional beeswax polish occasionally helps maintain the natural sheen and nourishes the dry grain of the wood.
