How do I open the front lid?

Most full hunter pocket watches feature a small button or push-piece integrated into the winding crown at the top of the case. Pressing this button releases the spring-loaded hinge, causing the protective metal cover to pop open and reveal the dial.

What is the difference between open face and full hunter?

An open face watch exposes the dial and glass directly to the outside world without any metal barrier. A full hunter encases that same dial behind a solid hinged lid, requiring the owner to open the cover to check the time.

How are these watches wound?

The vast majority of specimens from the Victorian and later periods utilise a stem-wind mechanism operated by turning the crown. Very early examples may require a separate key inserted directly into the back cover or onto the dial to tension the mainspring.

Can I wear a pocket watch daily?

These mechanical timekeepers suit regular wear provided they receive appropriate care, careful handling and periodic mechanical servicing by a horologist. Pairing the watch with a suitable chain helps secure it safely within a waistcoat or trouser pocket.
