What is a bouillotte lamp?

A bouillotte lamp is a traditional desk light featuring a central cluster of lights shielded by an adjustable toleware shade. The shade slides up and down a central metal rod to control the spread of illumination. Originally designed for card players, these pieces suit studies and side tables where focused, directional light is required.

How do I identify church altar lamps?

Church altar lamps are typically taller, heavier pieces cast in brass or gilded bronze, often featuring pricket spikes or wide drip pans. Their origins lie in ecclesiastical settings rather than domestic boudoirs. They bring a sculptural, architectural presence to a room when placed on sideboards or large consoles.

Are these lamps safe for modern wiring?

Most antique lighting pieces require professional rewiring to meet current electrical standards. Many examples have been updated with modern flex and tested for safety. Buyers should consult a qualified electrician to inspect older fittings before continuous daily use in the home.

How do I clean painted toleware shades?

Painted toleware requires gentle maintenance using a soft, dry cloth to remove dust. Avoid abrasive cleaners or excess moisture, which can damage the painted and enamelled surface. Preserving the original finish maintains the historical integrity of the lamp.
