How do I wire antique French wall lights?

Most vintage French wall lights require professional rewiring to meet current electrical standards. Modern heat-resistant flexible flex is threaded through the internal channels of the bronze arms during installation. Qualified electricians can adapt these fixtures to accept standard candle tubes and modern domestic voltage without altering the external antique metalwork.

What is the difference between ormolu and gilt bronze?

Ormolu specifically refers to cast bronze finished with a mercury-gilt coating during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The term translates from French as milled gold. General gilt bronze describes any bronze object with gold leaf or chemical gilding applied to the surface. Both finishes yield a warm metallic lustre.

How do I clean gilt bronze chandeliers?

Dust bronze and crystal components regularly using a soft feather duster or dry microfiber cloth. Avoid commercial metal cleaners, abrasive pads, or chemical solvents that strip the delicate gold surface. Stubborn grime on non-gilded areas requires gentle wiping with a damp cloth followed by immediate drying. Crystal drops can be washed individually in warm soapy water before reattachment.

Are antique French chandeliers heavy?

Large multi-arm chandeliers cast from solid bronze and laden with crystal elements possess considerable weight. They require secure anchoring directly into ceiling joists or structural nogging using appropriate steel fixings. Standard plasterboard ceilings will not support these heavy fixtures safely without reinforced ceiling hooks and patress boards.
