How do I hang a heavy framed oil painting?

Heavy oil paintings require sturdy wall fixings anchored directly into wall studs or masonry. Utilise picture wire rated well above the weight of the frame. Ensure the hanging height places the centre of the canvas at eye level for comfortable viewing.

Are watercolours sensitive to sunlight?

Watercolours on paper are susceptible to fading when exposed to direct, strong sunlight over long periods. Hang them on walls that receive indirect ambient light. Glass fronts protect the paper from dust and moisture but do not block ultraviolet rays entirely.

How do I tell an oil painting from a watercolour?

Oil paintings feature textured brushstrokes and opaque pigments applied to canvas or wood panels. The surface often shows visible layers of paint. Watercolours display transparent washes of pigment on paper, typically protected beneath glass rather than exposed to the open air.

What periods do these landscape pictures come from?

The selections date primarily from the nineteenth century, including Victorian and Edwardian examples, stretching into the mid-twentieth century. Artists of these eras favoured dramatic topography and pastoral lake settings painted in realistic or impressionistic styles.
