How do I hang a heavy framed oil painting?

Secure heavy giltwood frames directly into wall studs using appropriate steel picture hooks rated for the weight of the wood and canvas. Ensure the hanging wire or brackets on the reverse match the hardware supporting the wall anchor to prevent slippage.

Are these paintings cleaned professionally?

Historical canvases accumulate surface dirt and discoloured varnish over centuries of display in domestic and institutional settings. Conservation methods preserve the original pigment layers while removing obscuring grime from the surface.

How do I identify the school of painting?

Attribution relies upon brushwork techniques, costume details, and regional portrait conventions recorded by specific European workshops. Inscribed names and stylistic traits often link anonymous works to master circles or contemporary followers.

Where should I place a dark portrait?

Position canvases away from direct sunlight to protect delicate oil pigments and gold leaf from fading over time. Directional picture lighting enhances the deep shadows and luminous highlights inherent in seventeenth-century portraiture.
