How do I use a vesta case?

Open the spring-loaded or hinged lid to retrieve a match from the interior compartment. Strike the match against the serrated or grooved area located on the exterior base of the case. Keep the interior dry to ensure the matches strike properly when needed.

Are all these pieces sterling silver?

While the majority consist of sterling silver carrying standard British hallmarks, the selection also includes continental 800 silver, silver gilt, and nickel-plated brass variations. Check the individual description and stamps for specific metal grades. Assay office marks from cities like Birmingham and Chester help confirm the British sterling standard.

Can I carry these in a pocket?

Pocket vesta cases and matchsafes were originally manufactured with curved bodies specifically to fit comfortably inside a pocket or waistcoat. Table matchbox holders, conversely, were built larger for stationary use on desks or dining surfaces. Ensure the hinge and snap closure remain secure before carrying a pocket piece daily.
