How do I identify an edwardian inlaid sofa?

Look for light mahogany or rosewood frames decorated with thin contrasting stringing and satinwood floral motifs. The proportions are typically slender and upright compared to heavy nineteenth-century seating. Check for period upholstery specifications and distinctive Sheraton Revival styling cues that mark the turn of the twentieth century.

Were these sofas meant for daily lounging?

These pieces were constructed for formal reception rooms, drawing rooms, and ladies' parlours rather than heavy family lounging. Their frames are relatively light and support upright posture. Modern placement usually suits decorative settings like bedrooms, hallways, or quiet reading corners rather than busy family spaces.

How should I care for the inlaid wood?

Keep the timber away from direct sunlight and steady heat sources to prevent the delicate veneers and boxwood stringing from drying and lifting. Regular dusting with a dry, soft cloth maintains the finish safely. Avoid commercial silicone polishes and instead use traditional beeswax sparingly to nourish the antique polished surfaces.

What is a window sofa?

A window sofa is a compact, low-backed settee traditionally placed in a bay window to catch natural light without blocking views. They feature finished backs so they look correct when viewed from the room. These pieces share the same light inlaid mahogany construction as standard parlour sofas but on a smaller footprint.
