What is an edwardian brass stationery box?

An Edwardian brass stationery box is a lidded wooden container reinforced with brass mounts, hinges, or straps designed to organise letters and writing paper on a desk. These pieces typically date from the early twentieth century and combine functional timber compartments with decorative metalwork.

How were stationery boxes used?

Stationery boxes held writing paper, envelopes, and correspondence neatly on writing tables before the widespread use of modern office storage. They kept loose paper protected from dust and ink spills while maintaining an organised workspace in domestic libraries and studies.

How do I distinguish Edwardian from Victorian pieces?

Edwardian stationery pieces often exhibit lighter woods, satinwood inlay, and cleaner Arts and Crafts or Edwardian Sheraton Revival lines. Victorian items tend to feature heavier timbers like coromandel or walnut with dense brass banding and more ornate Gothic or campaign styling.

Are brass inkwells usually original?

Many desk sets retain their original matching glass or brass-lidded inkwells, though replacements do occur due to glass breakage over time. Examining the fit within the brass collar helps determine whether an inkwell belongs to the original stand.
