How were domed travel trunks used?

These trunks served as primary luggage for individuals undertaking long journeys by coach, ship, or rail. Their curved lids permitted travellers to pack items higher than the box rim while shedding rain during transit. Inside homes, they doubled as secure storage chests for garments, linens, and valuables. Their robust construction meant they could endure the rigours of baggage holds and carrier wagons.

Where should I place a domed trunk?

A domed trunk works effectively as a coffee table in a living room, providing both a flat-topped surface and internal storage. Position it centrally or near seating where the texture of the leather and metalwork can be appreciated. Alternatively, place one at the foot of a bed for spare blankets and pillows. Their substantial proportions anchor a bedroom scheme while keeping everyday clutter hidden.

How do I distinguish eighteenth-century trunks?

Eighteenth-century examples often feature heavy hand-sawn timber framing, thick iron bindings, and dense hand-hammered studwork. Construction methods rely on traditional joinery techniques distinct from later mass-produced Victorian hardware. Materials tend towards robust oak, heavy hide, and forged iron rather than lighter canvas or stamped metal. The presence of primitive locks and forged carrying handles further points to earlier periods.
