How do I clean distressed painted furniture?

Dust surfaces gently with a soft, dry cloth to avoid disturbing fragile or flaking paint layers. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners and excessive moisture, which can damage aged finishes. For stubborn marks, use a slightly damp cloth with mild soap, testing a small hidden area first. Pat dry immediately afterwards to protect the wood underneath.

Are these pieces suitable for daily use?

Most items were built for robust domestic or farmhouse environments and easily handle everyday tasks like storage or seating. Drawers, doors, and joints are constructed to function reliably despite their age. Care should be taken with moisture and heavy impacts to preserve the delicate aged paint surfaces. Placing felt pads under objects can prevent unnecessary scratching.

How can I tell original paint from later repainting?

Original finishes typically exhibit natural craquelure, subtle fading, and wear patterns consistent with the age of the underlying timber. Multiple underlying layers often peek through worn high-traffic areas rather than uniform modern coverage. Closer inspection under good light reveals accumulation of dirt in crevices and consistent oxidation around iron or brass hardware. Unnatural uniformity usually points to later decorative intervention.

What distinguishes Swedish country furniture?

Swedish country pieces, particularly from Gustavian and nineteenth-century traditions, favour pale, luminous paint palettes designed to maximise light in northern interiors. Common characteristics include fluted drawer fronts, restrained neoclassical lines, and simplified proportions. They balance formal architectural influences with practical rural construction, using native softwoods finished in muted greys, creams, and soft blues.
