How do I date a dark wood settee?

Dating relies on observing the combination of timber, joinery methods, and prevailing stylistic motifs visible in the frame. Elements like Regency curves, Victorian buttoning, or Edwardian inlays point to specific decades. Comparing the structural carcass and secondary woods helps confirm the era of manufacture against known design periods.

Where should I place a settee?

These pieces suit living rooms, large hallways, or spacious bedrooms where the timber frame can be viewed from multiple angles. Freestanding placement highlights the carved mahogany or inlaid rosewood backs. Ensure adequate clearance around the piece so the proportions of the sofa enhance the room rather than crowd it.

What is the difference between a sofa and a settee?

Historically, terms overlap, but a settee often implies a lighter, more formal wooden-framed seat with upholstered elements. Sofas frequently suggest larger, more deeply padded seating designed for lounging. In older listings, both terms describe multi-person wooden seats intended for parlour or drawing-room use.

How do I care for antique wood and fabric?

Protect the dark wood frames from direct sunlight and sudden temperature shifts to prevent the timber and veneer from drying out. Regular dusting with a soft cloth maintains the polished finish without chemical buildup. Vacuum upholstered surfaces gently using a low-suction attachment to protect the underlying textile structure.
