How do I care for mahogany?

Mahogany surfaces benefit from regular dusting with a soft, dry cloth to prevent grit from scratching the polished finish. Avoid placing the desk in direct sunlight or near heat sources to prevent the wood from drying out and splitting. Applying a quality beeswax periodically nourishes the timber and maintains its deep lustre. Avoid silicone-based sprays, which can build up and damage the historic polish over time.

Are these desks good for daily use?

These desks offer exceptional workspace and robust construction well suited to modern office environments. The large top and numerous drawers provide practical storage for modern stationery and equipment. Because they were built to last using dense hardwoods, they easily withstand daily tasks. Their freestanding nature also makes them practical focal points for studies and home offices.

How do I date a desk?

Dating a desk involves examining the timber species, construction methods, and hardware style. Pieces from the Georgian era often display cleaner classical lines, whereas Victorian and Edwardian examples frequently incorporate revival styles and heavier carvings. Drawer construction provides further clues, as hand-cut dovetails generally precede mass-produced machine joints. Maker stamps or labels inside the drawers can also help establish a precise period.
