What was a pot cupboard originally used for?

These cabinets were originally designed to house a chamber pot beside the bed during an era before indoor plumbing was common. The enclosed compartment kept nocturnal necessities out of sight while offering a flat surface on top for a candle or water pitcher. Over time, as domestic sanitation changed, their practical purpose shifted. Today, they function primarily as conventional bedside tables or small accent cupboards for modern living spaces.

How do I identify a Georgian piece?

Georgian and George III pieces typically display understated elegance, relying on the rich grain of mahogany rather than heavy carving. Look for refined proportions, slender legs, and traditional bracket feet or plinth bases. Construction methods also help with identification, as genuine examples feature hand-cut dovetails and timber consistent with the eighteenth century. Maker stamps or labels, when present, provide definitive confirmation of origin.

Are oak or mahogany versions more common?

Both timber types appear frequently, though they belong to distinct stylistic traditions. Oak examples often align with earlier periods or revival styles like Jacobean and Arts and Crafts, showing pronounced grain and occasional carving. Mahogany versions tend to date from the Georgian and Victorian eras, favouring smoother surfaces and polished finishes. Your choice will depend on whether you prefer the warm, rustic texture of oak or the refined dark reddish-brown tones of mahogany.
