How should I hang an antique watercolour?

Keep watercolours away from direct sunlight to prevent the pigments and the cream paper tone from fading. Acid-free backing materials and UV-protective glass shield the fragile paper from environmental damage over time. Ensure the room maintains stable humidity levels to protect both the paper support and the antique wood or gilt frame. Professional framing guarantees the paper breathes without touching the glass surface directly.

What periods do these watercolours cover?

The selections span the Regency, Victorian, and Edwardian eras, stretching into the early twentieth century. Each period brings distinct subject matter, from classical architecture to natural history studies. Nineteenth-century pieces frequently document British landscapes and European travel, while later works embrace illustrative techniques and domestic animal portraiture.

Are these watercolours signed by the artists?

Many examples bear the original signature or monogram of the artist, while others remain unattributed works of the British School. Signatures typically appear in ink or pencil near the lower margins of the paper. Unsigned works often rely on stylistic comparisons, period framing, or contemporary inscriptions on the reverse to indicate their origin and date.

What is the difference between watercolour and gouache?

Transparent watercolour allows the cream paper to show through thin washes of pigment, creating luminous effects. Gouache incorporates chalk or white pigment to create an opaque, heavier finish. Artists frequently combined both mediums on a single sheet of paper to balance delicate background washes with crisp, solid foreground details.
