What is a mule chest?

A mule chest combines a traditional blanket box with one or more drawers fitted into the base. This design evolved to provide easier access to stored garments without lifting the heavy top lid. Such pieces date predominantly from the Georgian and Victorian periods, serving as versatile storage in domestic interiors.

How do I care for waxed pine?

Waxed pine benefits from occasional application of traditional beeswax to nourish the wood and maintain its soft lustre. Keep the timber away from direct heat sources and strong sunlight to prevent drying and splitting. Regular dusting with a soft, dry cloth is sufficient for routine maintenance.

Are painted finishes original?

Many trunks retain their original paint, scumble, or grained decoration, though some pieces were repainted during their working lives. Examining the surface wear and underlying layers helps determine the history of the finish. Original paint schemes significantly enhance the character and interest of vernacular pieces.

How old is my pine trunk?

Dating relies on construction methods, hardware types, and stylistic indicators such as bracket feet or dovetail joints. Eighteenth-century and early nineteenth-century pieces often display hand-cut joinery and forged iron hinges. Later Victorian examples typically utilise machine-sawn timber and more standardised hardware.
