How were these chests used?

Households utilised these sturdy timber boxes for storing heavy woollen blankets, winter garments, and valuable household linens safely away from dust. Because they featured robust locks and hinged lids, families also relied on them to transport belongings or secure important documents.

How do I live with a painted chest?

Position your chest away from direct sunlight and sudden radiator heat to protect fragile historic pigments and prevent the timber from drying out. Use the flat or domed top as a stable surface for displaying decorative objects while keeping the interior free for practical blanket storage.

How can I tell the age of a coffer?

Examine the construction methods, tool marks on the timber, and the style of the iron hinges and strapwork to gauge the period of manufacture. Original painted surfaces, surface wear patterns, and the type of wood used also provide strong clues regarding whether a piece dates to the eighteenth century or later.
