How do I place a room divider?

Position the screen to anchor an open corner or create a distinct functional zone within a larger room. Ensure the panels have enough clearance to angle naturally without straining the hinges. Allow the painted surface to catch natural light from a window so the lacquer and gold leaf details remain visible. Keep the screen away from direct heat sources to protect the wood and lacquer finish.

What is a coromandel screen?

A coromandel screen is a heavy wooden folding panel coated in dark lacquer and carved using an incised technique. Artisans filled the recessed cuts with pigments and gold to depict figures, birds, and landscapes. These pieces typically consist of multiple folds and date from the eighteenth century through to the early twentieth century. Their substantial weight requires stable placement on level flooring.

How do I date an antique screen?

Examine the construction of the wooden frames, the style of the brass hinges, and the materials used for the panel substrate. Eighteenth-century pieces often display hand-carved coromandel work or painted leather, while Victorian examples frequently utilise black lacquer and papier-mâché. Compare the painted motifs and framing techniques against documented historical periods such as the Regency era or the Qing dynasty. Subtle wear patterns on the lacquer and edges also indicate age.

Can these screens be used for privacy?

Most multi-fold screens function effectively as visual barriers to divide living spaces or block sightlines. Taller four-fold to eight-fold panels offer substantial coverage across a room. Consider the number of panels and the overall height of the divider when planning your space. Lighter three-fold dressing screens suit smaller areas and temporary partitions.
